From almost the first page Robert Parker’s School Days
grabs your attention and won’t let go. There’s been a school shooting
and the guilty parties have been caught, or at least everyone thinks so.
Everyone, that is, except one of the boy’s Grandmother who hires Spenser
to investigate. With Pearl (Susan’s German Shorthaired Pointer) by his
side we follow Spenser through the investigation of facts that many
people don’t want investigated.
Parker does an excellent job of telling the story with characters that
are both real and quite believable. The facts in this case involving a
school shooting and small town politics might be almost too real for
some, given recent events in the real world. As another Spenser tale,
it’s quite enjoyable and I found it difficult to put down. The fast pace
and sometimes almost jerky action of the story keep you wondering what’s
coming next all the way to the end. The ending was not the conclusion I
was hoping for, but given the way the story unfolds it is quite
understandable.
Joe Montenga provides narration in a soft and smooth style that is quite
pleasant to listen to. Montenga has played the part of Spenser in
several movie versions of the novels and keeps the story moving.
Overall, a real page turner even if you’re not familiar with the Spenser
series.
